Who Cut the Cheese? : A Cutting Edge Way of Surviving Change by Shifting the Blame - Hardcover - Bargain Price (Sept. 15, 2000) by Mason Brown and Carl Krubenaker

Product Description

Who Cut the Cheese? uses a delightful little fable to encapsulate the fundamental rule of modern American management and the new economy: "Survive change by shifting blame."
The fable revolves around two malevolent rats and two spiteful "Punypeople" who find themselves trapped together in a maze, fighting over a dwindling supply of constantly moving cheese. Some characters adapt readily to this treacherous, shifting environment -- blaming the weak and overpowering the helpless. Others perish in horror, praying for death. Read this book and live!
Written for all ages, the story can be understood by even the youngest reader: The "maze"is a metaphor for life, and the "cheese" is a metaphor for whatever you desire in life -- be it worldly goods, spiritual well-being, or unspeakable sexual encounters too deviant even for the Internet.
The more advanced reader will also understand the secondary message of the book: "Resistance is futile." As soon as change happens, we must accept it immediately or suffer the consequences. This heavy-handed lesson is designed to engender unquestioning obedience to authority, and makes the book an ideal gift for subordinates.
Large companies would be well advised to give this book to each and every one of their employees, especially if they are considering a restructuring to bolster shareholder value. Extremely short, even including illustrations, the story takes less than an hour to read, but its unsettling conclusions on the nature of humanity should last a lifetime!

The 21 Most Powerful - Minutes to A Leader's Day by John C Maxwell

The 21 Most Powerful - Minutes to A Leader's Day by John C Maxwell

From getAbstract.com

John C. Maxwell provides a 21-week course of study covering 21 leadership laws based on readings from the Bible. He served as a pastor in various churches for 25 years before leaving Skyline Wesleyan in San Diego in 1995 to devote his time to writing, speaking and teaching leadership. Perhaps because he is the author of many books like this one, his writing is clear and well-suited to the purpose of educating and inspiring others, particularly those who share his Christian faith. In each chapter, Maxwell offers a brief introduction to a new principle and then supplies relevant daily Old and New Testament readings for the work-week. He focuses more on stimulating meditation and introspection than on laying out a detailed path to leadership greatness. On the fifth day of considering each principle, Maxwell invites you to use a self-assessment exercise on his Web site to help you understand the principle more fully. He also asks you to share what you have learned with others within a couple of days; the idea being that teaching a principle is the best way for you to learn it most thoroughly. getAbstract finds this to be a very useful, practical and thought-provoking book for readers who want to study leadership lessons in the light of their religious beliefs – if that’s not you, then you’ll want to lead the way to the next classroom instead.

Amazon.com Review

About the Book

Filled with smart tips given in the Fox signature style, counter- intuitive, controversial, and practiced, this hard-hitting collection of sales advice shows readers how to woo, pursue, and finally win any customer. In witty, succinct chapters, Fox offers surprising, daring, and totally practical wisdom that will help readers rise above the competition in any company in any field. A terrific resource for CEOs, as well as anyone looking to distinguish themselves in salesbe it books, cars, or real estateHow to Become a Rainmaker offers the opportunity to rise above the competition in any company, in any field.

From Booklist Review

This is an afternoon read, pure and simple. And chances are good that once readers accept Fox's hard-hitting yet commonsense approaches, they'll accept his sales process, which applies, by the way, to selling widgets, promoting intangible services, or selling yourself. Every one of the author's 50 two-page to four-page chapters contains just one nugget of information more than the preceding section, enough to keep the momentum and the attention. A sad story about the hazards of drinking coffee (it spilled--and the prospect was then distracted by a second crisis) is followed by a notice not to eat a major meal during a sales lunch, which is promptly followed by "no pen in the shirt pocket" advice. Fox's seemingly disparate hints and tips, in short, comprise a very logical and memorable way of rainmaking, and a short tome that will show anyone the how-tos. Barbara Jacobs

Differentiate or Die: Survival in Our Era of Killer Competition by Jack Trout with Steve Rivkin

Amazon.com Review

There are no two ways about it with Jack Trout. Either you've got a product or service that you can say is different, or you don't have much at all. In today's global marketplace and at its lightning-fast rate of change, there's no point in inventing and presenting a product only to sit back and hope that consumers everywhere will discover its greatness. It's not simply about what you or your product can do, it's about what you do differently from everyone else. Coauthors Trout and Steve Rivkin say it all in their no-holds-barred title,Differentiate or Die.A disciple of the marketing guru Rosser Reeves, who introduced the concept of the "unique selling proposition," Trout relays his vision of what can help you differentiate in blunt, tell-it-like-it-is prose. First he breaks the bad news that product quality, advertising creativity, price advantage, and breadth of product line are rarely successful ways to differentiate your business. Consumers expect the best quality, he says; they don't think it's a bonus. In the same vein, your competitor can slash prices just as quickly as you. After dismissing these common marketing techniques as futile, Trout concentrates on which differentiating ideas will set you apart from the pack: Being first (and staying there), owning a discernible attribute, having a heritage, becoming the preference of a particular consumer group, or even being the most recent arrival in a product arena are just some of these useful differentiates. Though the book's fast and quippy narrative style may leave some readers looking for more substance behind his adamant assertions, Trout's recommendations act as inspirational spurts of energy. A slim manual packed with punchy points, Differentiate or Die won't take you long to read but could make a lasting--you guessed it--difference to the success of your business. --S. Ketchum

Product Description

"Any damn fool can put on a deal, but it takes genius, faith, and perseverance to create a brand."-David Ogilvy

In today's ultra-competitive world, the average supermarket has 40,000 brand items on its shelves. Car shoppers can wander through the showrooms of over twenty automobile makers. For marketers, differentiating products today is more challenging than at any time in history yet it remains at the heart of successful marketing. More importantly, it remains the key to a company's survival.

In Differentiate or Die, bestselling author Jack Trout doesn't beat around the bush. He takes marketers to task for taking the easy route too often, employing high-tech razzle-dazzle and sleight of hand when they should be working to discover and market their product's uniquely valuable qualities. He examines successful differentiation initiatives from giants like Dell Computer, Southwest Airlines, and Wal-Mart to smaller success stories like Streit's Matzoh and Connecticut's tiny Trinity College to determine why some marketers succeed at differentiating themselves while others struggle and fail.

More than just a collection of marketing success stories, however, Differentiate or Die is an in-depth exploration of today's most successful differentiation strategies. It explains what these strategies are, where and when they should be applied, and how they can help you carve out your own image in a crowded marketplace. Marketing executives in all types of organizations, regardless of size, can learn how to achieve product differentiation through strategies including:
* Revisiting the U.S.P.
Rosser Reeves's classic unique selling proposition approach, updated for today's marketplace
* Positioning
Understanding how the mind works in the differentiating process
* Owning an Idea
Techniques to seize a differentiating idea, dramatize it, and make it your own
* Competition
How to use differentiating ideas against your competitors in the marketplace

Consumers today are faced with an explosion of choices. In this environment, distinctive product attributes are quickly copied by competitors, perceived by consumers to be minimal, or both. Still, those who fail to differentiate their product or service in the mind of the consumer won't stand a chance.

Differentiate or Die outlines the many ways you can achieve differentiation. It also warns how difficult it is to achieve differentiation by being creative, cheap, customer oriented, or quality driven things that your competitors can do as well.

Praise for Differentiate or Die

"Another great book by the king of positioning!"-John Schnatter, CEO, Papa John's International

"Differentiate or Die differentiates itself on the groaning marketing bookshelf with its lucid prose, its clear vision of the future marketplace . . . and its sensible solutions for surviving the frenzied competition we're sure to find there."-Dan Rather, CBS News

"What I like about Differentiate or Die is the book's emphasis on the power of logic, simplicity, and clarity-getting to the essence of a problem. In Silicon Valley, attributes like that can make the difference between having lunch and being lunch."-Scott McNealy, CEO, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

"Trout and Rivkin marvelously illustrate that differentiation is the cornerstone of successful marketing." -Philip Kotler, S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing,
Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University

"We've built our business by being first-and executing best. Jack Trout and Steve Rivkin are doing the same, delivering the timely, powerful insights that will drive tomorrow's marketing strategies. A must read for anyone looking to win in an unforgiving competitive marketplace."-Mike Ruettgers, CEO, EMC Corporation

Book Description

Positive feedback and meaningful recognition are proven and valuable but too often overlooked management tools. In an environment of continued downsizing, corporate mistrust, and employment at will, more than gimmicks and quick fixes are needed to instill commitment and inspire achievement. Recognizing and Rewarding Employees gives managers and leaders solid insight to what truly motivates employees, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Practical business strategies are thoughtfully presented along with hundreds of hands-on tips and ideas for encouraging peak performance.

Preface (from the book)

Managing in today’s complex environment is difficult. The unspoken psychological contract that defines the nature of the relationship between employers and employees continues to evolve. Employees are becoming increasingly “free” to move about—within as well as between organizations. Traditional boundaries of structure, time, location, and authority are blurring. Organizations striving to compete in a global economy are downsizing, merging, transforming, and migrating to newer forms of existence. Managers and non-managers alike are being challenged to do more with less, think “out of the box,” and collaborate in new and innovative ways to achieve common objectives. The old traditions and systems are breaking down, and newer conventions are being tried to achieve breakthrough results.

In the midst of a new global wilderness are pioneers, common and uncommon travelers, managers, stewards, free agents, “virtual” workforces—all converging on some new promised land. If you plan to venture out and — better yet — survive, you’ll need to know how to prepare yourself, what essential tools to take, what travel techniques and strategies to apply, and — ultimately — what “customs,” “language,” and “currency” will enable you to be conversant with the many people of varied interests and abilities you’ll meet — and manage — along the way.

This is a book about a new frontier—the new workplace. It’s a book about the needs and interests of the new workforce — epitomized by the “free agent/employee” — and the tools of recognition and rewards. You’ll learn about:

* The New Workplace - its “free agent/employees” — their values, interests, and goals;
* Work — how to make it personally meaningful and more strategically aligned;
* Motivation — its source and what drives it;
* Collaboration — its importance, along with what promotes and hinders it;
* Recognition — its many forms and its powerful and empowering energy;
* Rewards — what’s hot, what’s not, and the difference between those that are intrinsic and extrinsic; and,
* Stewardship — how it differs from leadership and why it is so important in the new workplace.

This is a book about people at work—and, specifically, about recognition and rewards. It may surprise you. It may excite you. We hope it will inspire you. The insights we lend and the conclusions reached are intended to convey a message — namely, that travel into the new wilderness is not for the “casual” traveler or “half-a-measure” managers. Success will be predicated upon a deeper understanding and mastery of the subjects of motivation, recognition, and rewards.

Chapter Highlights

The subject of recognition and rewards is complex. Rewards have the power to punish as well as compensate. As a manager in the new workplace, you’ll need to know how rewards work. We want you, our reader, to understand:

* The difference between rewarding and manipulating;
* The human nature of work and the relationship that exists between work and its performer/creators;
* The rewards of leadership and the illusory nature of power;
* How cultures shape desired outcomes and foster productivity and collaboration;
* Why recognition is a “whole person” experience;
* What reward systems move people and organizations closer to their goals; and
* How to foster responsibility and accountability naturally.
