Power and Influence: Mastering the Art of Persuasion by Robert L. Dilenschneider
Firnando Chau Review
From Publishers Weekly
"What do people know who are able to exert influence and advance their careers? What is the secret that they understand so well? I would say that they grasp a very simple relationship: the connection between communication, recognition, and influence," contends Dilenschneider, CEO of the public relations firm Hill & Knowlton, in this authoritative handbook on leadership strategies. He argues that heightened competition and corporate takeovers have created an extremely volatile and challenging business climate, and draws on his own experiences in coping with crises (e.g., the cyanide contamination of shipments of Chilean grapes to the U.S. in March 1989) by cultivating good relations with the "iron triangle" of press, government and special interest groups. Quality work and accountability, Dilenschneider stresses, are an executive's basic responsibilities, while open, ethical communication remains a crucial skill. Executive Program/Macmillan Book Club dual main selection; Fortune Book Club alternate.

The Death of Outrage: Bill Clinton and the Assault on American Ideals by William J. Bennett (Paperback - Sep 6, 1999)

Amazon.com Review
Don't look for President Clinton's picture in The Book of Virtues; bestselling author and former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett considers Bill Clinton uniquely unvirtuous. In the wake of the White House intern sex scandal, Bennett accuses Clinton of crimes at least as serious as those committed by Richard Nixon during the Watergate imbroglio. Rising above anti-Clinton polemics, The Death of Outrage urges the American public--which initially displayed not much more than a collective shrug--to take issue with the president's private and public conduct. Clinton should be judged by more than the state of the economy, implores Bennett. The commander in chief sets the moral tone of the nation; a reckless personal life and repeated lying from the bully pulpit call for a heavy sanction. The American people should demand nothing less, says the onetime federal drug czar. In each chapter, Bennett lays out the rhetorical defenses made on Clinton's behalf (the case against him is "only about sex," harsh judgmentalism has no place in modern society, independent counsel Kenneth Starr is a partisan prosecutor, etc.) and picks them apart. He may not convince everybody, but this is an effective conservative brief against Bill Clinton. --John J. Miller --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
From Booklist
That the author of the Book of Virtues (1993) is appalled by the Clinton-Lewinsky affair is certainly no surprise. Nor is it surprising that Bennett's take on the affair was rushed into publication just after the president's short speech on the matter. After all, if the president was to resign, the book would be moot. Bennett's stated objective is to put the presidential sex scandal into a larger perspective; he hopes to shows that if Americans accept the arguments made in Clinton's defense, "we will have committed an unthinking act of moral and intellectual disarmament." To make sure that doesn't happen, Bennett sets out all Clinton's defenses and attempts to shoot them down. His topics include sex, character, politics, Ken Starr, law, and judgment. Anyone who has heard Bennett (or any of his fellow talking-heads) on the unending television shows that are tracking the scandal will find nothing new here. On the other hand, Bennett's organization is crisp, and his arguments, unlike those of so many on both sides of the issue, are cogent. That doesn't mean a bit of demagoguery here and a bit of disingenuousness there doesn't creep in. For instance, he baldly states that Clinton or Reno could simply fire Starr if they feel he has performed his job so poorly. Surely he's old enough to remember the Saturday Night Massacre and how well that worked out for Nixon. Whether this book will change anyone's mind is doubtful, but there can be no doubt about one thing: Bennett will continue to turn up on the talk shows. U.S. News & World Report A piercing commentary on the Moinca Lewinsky scandal and a defining event within it. -- Review
Product Description
In this new, updated edition of a book heralded as a clarion call to the nation's conscience, William Bennett asks why we see so little public outrage in the fade of the evidence of deep corruption within Bill Clinton's administration. The Death of Outrage examines the Monica Lewinsky scandal as it unfolded, from Clinton's denials that he had had sex with a young White House intern, to his testimony before the grand jury, to the nation's decision not to remove Clinton from office. Brick by brick, Bennett dismantles the wall of defenses offered by Clinton and his apologists, and casts the clear light of moral reason and common sense on a shameful chapter in American history.
About the Author
William J. Bennett served as Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President Bush, and as Secretary of Education and Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities under President Reagan. He is the editor of The Book Virtues and is currently co-director of Empower America in Washington, D.C.
From The Washington Post
...a slim book with a correspondingly slim premise ... Bennett displays contempt for average Americans, calling us fools because we do not view the president the same way he does. Rather than seeking to understand the moral underpinnings of positions others take, he dismisses them as debased, lacking in morality. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting with Your Partner by Phillip C. McGraw
Relationship Rescue: A Seven-Step Strategy for Reconnecting with Your Partner by Phillip C. McGraw (Hardcover - Aug 31, 2001)
Amazon.com Review
As a follow-up to his bestselling book Life Strategies, Oprah acolyte Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D., moves from aiding the aimless individual to coaching the disconnected couple. McGraw has distilled his more than two decades of counseling experience into a seven-step strategy he calls "Relationship Rescue.""I'm prepared to kick a hole in the wall of the pain-ridden, unhappy maze you've gotten yourself into, and provide you clear access to action-oriented answers and instructions on what you must do to have what you want," says Dr. Phil. His aim is to expose and eliminate the saboteurs that cause senseless damage to already-fragile marriages, and, like an emotional root canal, to replace them with values he says provide positive results. If you follow Dr. Phil's strategy, he will lead you on a precise journey to uncover your heart and then share it with your partner as part of taking the "risk of intimacy."
Dr. Phil leads you to "reconnect with your core" in the first five steps of his seven-step strategy. By no means a quick fix, there are in-depth and rigorous questionnaires, surveys, tests, and profiles that require a "brutally candid" mindset, with such fill-in-the-blanks as "List five things that today would make you fall out of love with your partner." With this internal work accomplished, you'll then move on to reconnecting with your partner during a two-week, half-hour-a-day short course. As a "dyad," you and your loved one take turns giving monologues on topics such as "The most positive thing I took away from my mother and father's relationship was..."
Once the "reconnection" has been established, Dr. Phil says the work shifts to a management role, as relationships are always a work in progress. Dr. Phil humorously refers to his own marriage throughout the book, sharing his mishaps and victories in learning to accept and enjoy what he sees as fundamental but complementary differences between men and women. --John Youngs --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Oprah's relationship expert and the author of the hugely popular Life Strategies, McGraw offers a challenge to readers in troubled marriages. (Though he refers to "relationships," his comments about the roles of men and women make it obvious that McGraw has mostly traditional marriages in mind.) With typical frankness, the Dallas psychologist declares that the underlying reason that "your relationship is in trouble [is] because you set it up that way." Traditional relationship counseling doesn't work, McGraw says, so he dares readers to follow his multistep plan for "reconnecting," which demands honest exploration, through exhaustive self-tests and questionnaires designed to define each partner's needs and expectations. The last step of McGraw's program is probably the most difficult and rewarding: 14 days of structured reconnection exercises in which the partners share their deepest feelings. By participating with the required level of commitment, candor and seriousness, couples would seem to guarantee enhancing their relationships. Despite the strengths of his program, McGraw's compelling television presence doesn't translate well to the page. He reminds readers so often that the "reconnecting" process will not be easy or fun that at times he seems more hectoring than persuasive--not that this is likely to matter to his viewers and fans. One-day laydown on February 8; television and radio satellite tours. (Feb.)

From Library Journal
McGraw does a wonderful job of examining practical steps that can help to rescue floundering intimate relationships. From the beginning, he acknowledges that only one partner may be inspired to take the action he recommends. He says the core causes of relationship collapse include believing in relationship myths; failing to take personal responsibility for the relationship; and ignoring one's own "core consciousness" (i.e., that which is integral to one's own belief systems). He then helps the listener learn how these blocks can be identified and overcome. McGraw's acknowledged belief in a "Higher Power" might also bring comfort to users who desire a religious basis for healing. The advice itself, however, is mainstream, obviously based on McGraw's broad experience as a counselor, and will almost certainly inspire someone looking for help for a relationship in crisis. Librarians acquiring this program must be aware of limitations that may make it a secondary purchase. First, this tape is meant to be used over an extended period of time. Second, a "relationship test booklet" is included in the packageAa small pamphlet that will soon be lost in most libraries. Finally, the author indicates that use of this book alone is enough to save a failing relationship. Most patrons, after reviewing the audiobook, will decide if they want to have their own copy or not. In the meantime, it may offer hope to anyone struggling to make a relationship work.AKathleen Sullivan, Phoenix P.L.

Plain and simple, this is the best audio on fixing romantic relationships that's ever been made. It's not perfect (Dr. Phil's cowboy omnipotence is not everyone's taste), but it covers every aspect of rediscovering and nurturing a long term connection. He urges listeners to first become integrated by finding their "core consciousness" and then to make a decision, if possible, to do whatever their partner needs to make the relationship work. The advice is well organized and supported by fabulous exercises, and it's mainly for couples who want to succeed with each other. Intuitive and sensible by anyone's standards, the program gives specific advice on how to get away from unhealthy ways of connecting and find satisfaction in unconditional commitment and giving. Amazon.com Review
General Powell may have undertaken this book as a form of paid political test marketing, but it turns out to be a success of an altogether different kind. We don't learn from this book if Powell is presidential material, but his recounting of the various steps of his career give us an unrivaled view of the ins and outs of military bureaucracy and shows how the modern American military, with its consistent emphasis on can-do attitudes and actual results, is a much more congenial place for realizing one's talents than our still-alarmingly pigeonholing general society.
From School Library Journal
YA?The eminently readable journey of one African American boy from a close-knit neighborhood in the South Bronx through his rise to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to civilian retirement. Powell was neither an athlete nor a scholar; his childhood centered around his home, friends, and church. Later, in college, he found his niche. ROTC offered structure and purpose. A recounting of his army career and the support offered by family and friends are the primary focus of this work. Challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities opened by each posting are shared. Commanding officers, selected business contracts, and four presidents are introduced and evaluated, almost all in a positive light. Powell's involvement with and analysis of national and international affairs, from Vietnam to the Clinton administration, are succinctly and objectively recounted. Scattered throughout the book are personal rules of conduct and occasional incidents of particular kindnesses and of racism. Teens are given an opportunity to spend some time with a thoughtful, positive leader. They can share one participant's view of recent history and gain one perspective on our country's current needs.?Barbara Hawkins, Oakton High School, Fairfax, VA

From Library Journal
This is the "story so far," as General Powell tells it, from the Bronx to Vietnam to the White House, from the common to the regal. His account is one of captivating extremes, tales that span from peeling potatoes with the Soviet General Staff to conversing with the Queen of England. When Powell is not working on world crises-Panama, Iraq, Haiti-he's doing normal things like normal people, courting, quitting smoking, fighting calories. As a White House Fellow, National Security Advisor, and then the "youngest officer, the first African American, and the first ROTC candidate" to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell dealt with "every issue from arms control to Bermuda tax treaties." It's all very personable: Powell's Rules for running a meeting, his political philosophy, working for a chocoholic Defense Secretary, getting caught by Pentagon security with an antique rifle. But will he run for president? No clear answer is given here. For popular biography collections.

The former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recalls his youth in the South Bronx, his military service in Germany and Korea, his experiences with discrimination, his tours in Vietnam, and his rise to the heights of America's political and military elite. 500,000 first printing. First serial, Time. Tour.
From the Publisher
Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. He was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. He knew the rough life of the streets. He overcame a barely average start at school. Then he joined the Army. The rest is history - but a history that until now has been known only on the surface. Here, for the first time, he himself tells us how it happened, in a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier's directness. He writes of the anxieties and missteps as well as the triumphs that marked his rise to four-star general, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, mastermind of Desert Storm, and now the man the country would most like to draft as President just as it drafted General Eisenhower before him in 1952. We see Powell growing up, getting into mischief, going to church with his father, working in a bottling plant, joining the ROTC. We follow him as a green young lieutenant on his first foreign posting in Germany, where his ascent is nearly aborted by a blunder on the day he is assigned to guard an atomic cannon. We go on patrol with him into the jungles of Vietnam, where he is wounded, and then, in the first surprise turn of his career, into the every-bit-as-dangerous thickets of Washington bureaucracy as a Pentagon aide in the Carter administration. We see how he handled the humiliations inflicted on him as a black soldier traveling in the Deep South and the unnerving challenges he faced as a battalion commander in Korea, where the army guarding the border with North Korea was plagued by drugs, drinking, a lack of discipline, and racial tension. We are edge-of-the-seat spectators to some of the great international dramas of our time - Desert Storm, the invasion of Panama, the dark dealings of Iran-contra with Ollie North and Bill Casey, the climactic meetings with Gorbachev. And we are present also at the encounters with President Clinton on the controversial question.

General Powell was born in New York City in 1937 and raised in the South Bronx by his parents, who had immigrated to America from Jamaica. He came up through the New York City public school system and received a commission as an army second lieutenant upon graduation from the City College of New York in 1958.
Early in his career, General Powell was stationed in Germany and in a number of posts in the United States, and served two tours in Vietnam, 1962-1963 and 1968-1969. The Bamboo Network, How Expatriate Chinese Entrepreneurs Are Creating a New Economic Superpower in Asia by Murray L. Weidenbaum and Samuel Hughes
Product Description
The Bamboo Network shows how a remarkable group of ethnic Chinese families has been the driving force behind China's transition from communism to capitalism: the economic miracle" that took the Western business world by surprise. Murray Weidenbaum, a leading international economist, and Samuel Hughes trace the history of these enterprising leaders, who fled the mainland after the Communist takeover in 1948 and settled through out Southeast Asia. Following in the tradition of generations of expatriate Chinese merchants, they began establishing small family businesses. Today, the authors show, these have expanded into conglomerate business empires. Entrusting corporate divisions almost exclusively to relatives, and dealing extensively with fellow expatriates, these entrepreneurs have formed close-knit and formidable business spheres throughout Southeast Asia -- a "bamboo network."
Members of the bamboo network were well-positioned to do business in China when this first became possible: since they "speak the language," both literally and culturally, they were favored as business partners by the both the Chinese government and the emerging private sector. They have been financing and often managing the development of manufacturing, banking, and other key industries in China.
Western investors and entrepreneurs seeking to enter the Chinese market are a step behind the members of the bamboo network. This book evens the score. Weidenbaum and Hughes show how private enterprise can thrive in China, providing unrivaled insight into the philosophy and culture that inform doing business there. The Bamboo Network will be indispensable reading for those who wish to crack the world's largest market and investment opportunity. For, despite the serious domestic problems likely to arise within the region, overseas Chinese business families will no doubt continue to take advantage of changing threats and opportunities in the fastest-growing and most competitive economy in the world. Whether as friends or rivals of the bamboo network, Americans must learn more about this exotic sector of the global marketplace.

The son of Italian immigrants, Jerry has become one of the most powerful men in sports. One of only a handful of "triple aces" in World War II, Ken returned from a POW camp to start a business he later sold for $139 million. A mother of seven, Noel has been called "the third most powerful businesswoman in L.A." At a time when people are looking for spiritual meaning and purpose in their work, stories of people with depth and balance in their lives who have overcome remarkable obstacles yet achieved remarkable success are more inspirational than ever. Authors Oster and Hamel tell twenty such inspirational stories outlining these entrepreneurs' commitment to God, genuine love of people, willingness to take risks, and ability to learn and adapt to change. The Entrepreneur's Creed combines sage counsel on how to be spiritually and ethically grounded with sound wisdom on success.

He is a professional writer with over a dozen books to my credit, including a trilogy of titles dealing with faith and business: The Entrepreneur's Creed, Executive Influence and Giving Back.

About the Book
There’s a crisis in business today," say corporate recognition consultants Gostick and Elton. "The rhetoric we’ve been using for years—about people being ‘our most valuable asset’—has actually come true. Without much warning, we woke up one day and realized that having the right talent in this competitive marketplace is the key to success . . . Go figure."
But there is a way to retain your best employees and win their loyalty and commitment: It’s called Employee Recognition. Managing with Carrots illustrates how to implement a strategic employee recognition program and presents case studies of how North America’s finest companies create powerful recognition experiences.
From the Inside Flap
A peson entering the workforce today will have eight to ten jobs during his or her working life, and most people will change careers at least once. For a company trying to stay ahead in a competitive world, this decline in employee commitment could be the difference between corporate success and oblivion.
But it is possible to win employee commitment and retain the best employees. Many of the world's finest organizations have carefully built cultures of employee recognition, and their efforts have been rewarded with well-documented increases in employee satisfaction, productivity and profitability. Unfortunately, most organizations have no idea how underappreciated their workers feel, and many wonder why so many of their employees leave for new jobs that pay just pennies more an hour.
Corporations can save thousands, even millions, of dollars and man-hours by keeping their best employees instead of continually recruiting and training new people. Managing with Carrots shows you how. Based on years of practical research focused on the best managers in the best organizations, Gostick and Elton explain how to create powerful, bonding recognition experiences and present case studies from some of North America's finest companies.
Use this book to create your own plan for rewarding employees, and watch attitudes change. Let the experts guide you through the steps to rewarding employees for actions that support your company's goal--without spending a fortune.

About the Boook
Peter Drucker is arguably the most influential architect of today's corporate society. Yet no concise overview of his life and work has ever appeared—until now. Creating a Drucker primer as much as a biography, Jack Beatty has distilled the essence of Drucker's beliefs and strategies into one engaging volume. Spanning Drucker's childhood in Vienna during the first world war, through his first American teaching jobs when raging factions debated the best form of government (if any), to his immersion in modern management theory using General Motors as a model, and finally, to the era of downsizing facing his Fortune 500 clients, The World According to Peter Drucker also captures our own corporate evolution in this century.

Book Description
Positive feedback and meaningful recognition are proven and valuable but too often overlooked management tools. In an environment of continued downsizing, corporate mistrust, and employment at will, more than gimmicks and quick fixes are needed to instill commitment and inspire achievement. Recognizing and Rewarding Employees gives managers and leaders solid insight to what truly motivates employees, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Practical business strategies are thoughtfully presented along with hundreds of hands-on tips and ideas for encouraging peak performance.
Preface (from the book)
Managing in today’s complex environment is difficult. The unspoken psychological contract that defines the nature of the relationship between employers and employees continues to evolve. Employees are becoming increasingly “free” to move about—within as well as between organizations. Traditional boundaries of structure, time, location, and authority are blurring. Organizations striving to compete in a global economy are downsizing, merging, transforming, and migrating to newer forms of existence. Managers and non-managers alike are being challenged to do more with less, think “out of the box,” and collaborate in new and innovative ways to achieve common objectives. The old traditions and systems are breaking down, and newer conventions are being tried to achieve breakthrough results.
In the midst of a new global wilderness are pioneers, common and uncommon travelers, managers, stewards, free agents, “virtual” workforces—all converging on some new promised land. If you plan to venture out and — better yet — survive, you’ll need to know how to prepare yourself, what essential tools to take, what travel techniques and strategies to apply, and — ultimately — what “customs,” “language,” and “currency” will enable you to be conversant with the many people of varied interests and abilities you’ll meet — and manage — along the way.
This is a book about a new frontier—the new workplace. It’s a book about the needs and interests of the new workforce — epitomized by the “free agent/employee” — and the tools of recognition and rewards. You’ll learn about:
* The New Workplace - its “free agent/employees” — their values, interests, and goals;
* Work — how to make it personally meaningful and more strategically aligned;
* Motivation — its source and what drives it;
* Collaboration — its importance, along with what promotes and hinders it;
* Recognition — its many forms and its powerful and empowering energy;
* Rewards — what’s hot, what’s not, and the difference between those that are intrinsic and extrinsic; and,
* Stewardship — how it differs from leadership and why it is so important in the new workplace.
This is a book about people at work—and, specifically, about recognition and rewards. It may surprise you. It may excite you. We hope it will inspire you. The insights we lend and the conclusions reached are intended to convey a message — namely, that travel into the new wilderness is not for the “casual” traveler or “half-a-measure” managers. Success will be predicated upon a deeper understanding and mastery of the subjects of motivation, recognition, and rewards.
Chapter Highlights
The subject of recognition and rewards is complex. Rewards have the power to punish as well as compensate. As a manager in the new workplace, you’ll need to know how rewards work. We want you, our reader, to understand:
* The difference between rewarding and manipulating;
* The human nature of work and the relationship that exists between work and its performer/creators;
* The rewards of leadership and the illusory nature of power;
* How cultures shape desired outcomes and foster productivity and collaboration;
* Why recognition is a “whole person” experience;
* What reward systems move people and organizations closer to their goals; and
* How to foster responsibility and accountability naturally.
Special Features
The idea behind the books in the Briefcase Series is to give you practical information written in a friendly person-to-person style. The chapters are short, deal with tactical issues, and include lots of examples. They also feature numerous boxes designed to give you different types of specific information.

* The New Workplace - its “free agent/employees” — their values, interests, and goals;
* Work — how to make it personally meaningful and more strategically aligned;
* Motivation — its source and what drives it;
* Collaboration — its importance, along with what promotes and hinders it;
* Recognition — its many forms and its powerful and empowering energy;
* The difference between rewarding and manipulating;
* The human nature of work and the relationship that exists between work and its performer/creators;
* The rewards of leadership and the illusory nature of power;
* How cultures shape desired outcomes and foster productivity and collaboration;
* Why recognition is a “whole person” experience;
* What reward systems move people and organizations closer to their goals; and
* How to foster responsibility and accountability naturally.
